OUTSTANDING NEWS!!!

God is SO great! I was given a break today...and throughout this next year too! Just found out this morning that Nathan was selected through random lottery for a spot in the Fall Kindergarten class at Valley Alternative Magnet school...current school of his big brother, Jackson. I am so pleased and relieved to FINALLY have 2 kids at the same school! This has never happened for our family before now (actually as of August 15th when school resumes).

Nathan is desparate to go to 1st grade next year, but David and I strongly feel that he needs another year in Kinder for social and emotional reasons. So this will be bitter-sweet for Nathan...THRILLING for Jackson!

My conversation with Jackson last night about his day at school

Jackson: Mommy, Heather wasn't at school today (Heather is his teacher) so we had to go to another teacher's class.
Me: Really? Why no sub?
Jackson: Well, I don't know. Maybe the subs weren't in the mood this morning.
Me: Well too bad.
Jackson: So anyway mommy, I went to a 3rd grade class and had to be quiet the whole time and just read or do our homework for the week.
Me: OK.
Jackson: But, it was really cool watching what they were learning. They were learning about contractions!!!
Me: CONTRACTIONS?! Wait, do you mean fractions???
Jackson: Oh ya, ya...fractions...
Me: Oh thank God!

*Side Note: Already called the school about this no sub thing and it's all good. Jackson's story was half accurate, and the other half, it's all about showing some grace and understanding at times.

  1. That's a funny story! I'm curious why they put him in a 3rd grade class, and not a 2nd grade class. And more appropriate...is there not another 1st grade class? Sorry, one more question, lol...does he (and all the students in his class) always call his teacher by her first name?

  3. 1. They separated all the kids amongst 3 different classes...different grades (but nothing beyond 3rd grade) so they stayed within the "legal" limits of teacher/kid ratio
    2. No, there is only 1 Kinder class, 1 1st grade class. Starting in 2nd grade, there are 2 or more classes per grade level. This is common in Magnet schools.
    3. At this school, all the students call their teachers and administrators by their 1st name. Teachers and Admin will call parents by their 1st name. It was VERY difficult to get used to and I usually call Heather, Ms. Heather. Which they don't even like that but that's my compromise. ;-) The kids' Pediatrician's office is the same way. They say to call the Dr's...'Dr. Jeremy'. We don't. We say it the traditional way...but that's because they don't enforce either style.

  4. BTW! Jackson was NOT thrilled with this news! LOL! He thinks the school is just his. Trevor is ticked off too. He wants to go to "their" school too. I told him that will very likely never happen. :-/ Nathan on the other hand??? HE WAS THRILLED! I failed to mention the Kinder part because I wanted him to just be excited for a bit. Besides, we have talked with him a lot lately about doing Kinder again, regardless of what school he was at.
