Blowing Off The Cobwebs and Dust...

Tonight I took the time to answer some pre-interview questions for the entry level assistant position that I mentioned last week. I really had to dig deep and even bounce off some wording from David so I don't sound like a house wife, but like a professional that I once was. My interview at Fox is on Friday morning.

Whether I get the job or not (or accept it), I already feel like a winner. The fact that I had the guts to point blank ask a complete stranger if his company was hiring I think says something about me willing to step out of my comfort zone and really have my family's financial goals on the forefront of my mind. Also, there has been several steps that I have had to go through (in obviously a short period of time) and apparently I have said or done something right (honestly, it's God...I really can't take credit!) to have been offered an interview. In this economy PLUS the lack of my professional experience over the last 8 years I feel like a winner and that I have accomplished something big already.

There is a LOT to still consider if I were offered this job. Our world would dramatically change!!! I hate change! lol The health insurance and pay are extremely tempting so that's why I have been in prayer about it. I've been asking God how we're supposed to afford the recent circumstances that are NOT in our control and so far, this has been the only avenue that has been presented to us. So...I wait for confirmation as I continue in the process of finding work with health insurance.

I still continue to work on my lice/nit mission with Lausd on a daily basis. I have still gotten no where with Deasy. Typical...

It's a Wrap!

Ahhhhh....a huge sigh of relief! Trevor and Nathan's first experience of being on stage in front of a HUGE audience has temporarily come to an end. The boys did GREAT!!! Trevor took his role very serious (while being so stinking handsome!), while Nathan soaked up the ability to just be his adorable, silly, animated self. I am extremely proud of the courage, dedication, respect and follow thru that both Trevor and Nathan displayed over the last 3 months and 1 week. They have both enjoyed the entire process...not even 1 complaint...ever throughout the entire block of time spent on this production. I think it's fair to say I did enough complaining about it for the both of them! lol

I had the pleasure to work backstage supervision for the boys' group. It was a very humbling experience! I am so used to calling the shots in my household but I soon found myself in an environment where I was a little peon that was taking orders instead of giving orders. To be perfectly honest though, it was quite refreshing! I didn't have to be the decision maker for most things and I just followed someone else's lead (the head supervisors there). MET2 was so organized and delegated so well, that I felt like I was able to tuck away my bossy-ness and just relax in my role there. There were about 40 kids (boys and girls) in their group alone, ranging from 4-9 years old. It was hot, cramped, chaotic and loud. However, I had the opportunity to watch the boys interact with kids that were all new to them just a short time ago. There were SO many different personalities flying about so that in itself was a big challenge. By the last day of performances (yesterday), Trevor was known as the kid to go to for AWESOME paper airplanes (seriously was a huge hit...bonus was that it was a "quiet" activity ;-)) and little girls were constantly "petting" Nathan and saying how cute he is.

Specifically, I was impressed with the organization of MET2, the friendliness of volunteer parents, the teenagers in the cast were VERY sweet and encouraging to all their fellow cast mates including the young little ones, all the cast (even my young group) knew EXACTLY their cues and dance moves and the prompt start to each performance.

A few surprises for me were just how caddy some girls are, even at a young age. I never thought in a million years I'd say this...but...I am so happy I do not have a girl!!! Yes folks, I have said it! Keep record, because I will likely deny this confession at a later date. :-) These 3-5 divas in particular were very "click-ish" and hurt many other's feelings with their mean words and actions. I couldn't believe it! I was actually thanking the Lord to myself that I deal with boogers, dirt, fart noises and pretend sword fighting from my 3 boys over this drama I was dealing with, with just a few girls. Lastly, I was surprised that I had a mother/backstage volunteer of a little girl that stands next to Nathan during the performance, tell me that her little girl and Nathan were making out! HOLY SMOKES!!! I couldn't believe it! I had to actually tell my child to keep his hands and mouth to himself! Of course the two just giggled and said they were going to get married...blah, blah, blah...lol For some reason I always thought it would be Jackson having the first kiss of all the boys... lol ;-)

Due to Spring baseball season, we will not be participating in MET's production of Sound of Music that debut's in June. I will strongly consider registering any of the willing boys for their following production that will fall, this time, next year.

Switching Gears...

Before the first performance yesterday (where friends and family arrived to watch!), Trevor and Jackson had 2 hour baseball assessments in the morning. We had to put aside the make-up and hair products for the Musical and dust off some of the equipment needed for baseball. It brought back fond memories from last year's baseball season. We headed out to the ball field where Trevor, Jackson and fellow ball players were observed catching ground balls, running bases and batting from a pitching machine. The boys were having so much fun! They really seemed to enjoy the fresh air, the ability to run around and just be typical boys.

Baseball practices (yes, plural...3 practices a week...1 for each boy) start either this week or next week. In Trevor's division this year, he and his team mates will learn how to pitch and will eventually start pitching during the games this season (I am so nervous about that! lol).

Although Seussical the Musical is over, we don't have to say good-bye to all of their cast mates, as a couple of the families in the Musical are actually part of our same baseball league, VCAA!!! We found out throughout our time in the Musical process so we're very excited to watch these actors gone ball players, show their athletic abilities (as well as their talent on stage).

To say the least, this past week has been a huge mix of emotions. Mostly exciting ones! I am thankful to have a couple of days to breathe and get back into our routine. Our calendar this week brings me work, Nathan's Upper GI study, Trevor's school dance performance and David's ribbon cutting at work. I look forward to seeing God's hand in all of this...

It Might Pay To Be Nice!

When picking up the boys from their final rehearsal (PRAISE THE LORD!!!), I passed by a dad with his son, trying to figure out from another parent where he needs to go to pick up his child. I overheard and told him to follow me because I was going that way too. As we were walking, I asked him if he had ever seen Mr. Mom. He had not. Well I explained the seen where the carpool lady at the school was telling Jack, "you're doing it wrong"! Anyway, I got a good laugh from this guy. The rehearsal runs late (by 35 min!!!) so the siblings are playing and there is just a bunch of small talk. Finally I asked him what he does for a living. He's an executive at FOX Entertainment. He was surprised by my excitement. He said most people cringe b/c of Fox News and I said I'm all for Fox News! More small talk and then I drop the bomb and point blank asked him if they're hiring. I need benefits! He said actually, we are and I personally need an entry level assistant. He tried talking the position down by saying it only pays 30k/yr and it's just a bunch of scheduling travel, calendar and answering phones...but, it does come with health benefits. I said PERFECT!!! All the meanwhile, I was backtracking in my brain about whether I was nice to this guy right off the bat or was I a resentful, bitter house wife leading this dad who has no clue about the Musical to his child. NOPE! I WAS PLEASANT as I recall! lol Anyway, so Jonathan gave me his e-mail address and told me to send over my resume. HAHAHAHA...Ya, ummm...let me look for that! I did tell him that I am working part time for a family as their personal assistant and that I currently do everything they need me to do as it is. He was very interested in that tid-bit because his favorite assistant had been a personal assistant to a family prior to working for him so he said it's a good track record so far.

So...hopefully I can find my resume on our computer somewhere tonight and send it over ASAP. Totally not looking for full-time right now, part-time is WAY more preferred but I think it's worth at least getting more information and seeing what happens. God knows our needs so who knows what's next for us!

Don't Bug Me - Day 12

Update: No returned call from Principal. Not my bad if the education class is not well attended b/c there wasn't enough time to make people aware. Return a freaking phone call. Thanks.

Don't Bug Me - Day 11

Update: Called Deasy, left another message. Lausd Dr office called me and we have a Kid's Health & Safety class scheduled at Nathan's school for Feb. 10th. Lausd main Dr and Head Nurse lady will both be there to run the class.

Details: From the sounds of it, Nury Martinez (Local District 2 Head Person) paid a visit to Nathan's classroom yesterday. Nathan's discription of her was pretty funny. "Long black hair, has the same last name as my principal, but she's not my principal." I knew who it was pretty quickly. Interesting that she visited his classroom...

And The Beat Goes On...Oh Wait, I Already Used That Title!

Well, never a dull moment around my home. Trevor has a cold (but it's not slowing him down), I feel like I have a cold starting, Jackson has a painful stomachache (certain he'll be up at 11 pm throwing up), Nathan had his GI appointment today, David had another successful day at work.

Nathan's GI Appointment

Gastroenterologist strongly thinks all of Nathan's chest pains, coughing and breathing complaints are from acid reflux. Next Wednesday, Nathan will have an Upper GI Study done at Cedars (it's outpatient and takes 30 min). Dr will have results the same day but has asked that I call the following day for results. It's a SUPER LONG story but bottom line is, they're checking the condition of Nathan's Nissen Fundiplication and check for a hiatal hernia. After results of test are in, the Dr will then decide which test he'd like to do next (if any at all, however he felt strongly that they'll do more)...either an endoscopy (have to be sedated) and/or a ph probe study (no sedation). The Dr really doesn't think it's  a good idea to repair the Nissen if it has come undone since this would be the 2nd time in a short period of time. The hiatal hernia is a different story so who knows. All these results from Nathan's studies will be discussed with Nathan's surgeon, Dr Frykman. Dr Frykman has done all his surgeries (minus the ear tubes) so he knows Nathan's anatomy best. We are canceling Nathan's cardiologist appointment, per the Pediatrician's recommendation. I agree.

I have a lot of frustration, sadness and anxiety regarding this news today. Yes, there is some time before we will actually know results but this is all so surreal and it's difficult not to have these strong feelings. I thought it was hard dealing with all this back when Nathan was a baby...try dealing with just the thoughts, now at age 5! Unreal...

Life Is A Seussical Musical

Day 3 of 3 hour rehearsals for Trevor and Nathan (and their castmates!) for their Musical performance. Thankfully we have tomorrow evening off, which will give us a little bit of time to work on their baseball skills (after speech therapy) since I just happened to see on-line that Trevor and Jackson have maditory baseball assessments this Saturday morning...BEFORE the Musical.

From this past Saturday to this Saturday alone, Trevor and Nathan will have put in 27 hours towards rehearsals and/or performances for the Seussical!!! Everyone is a little touchy and will cry or scream at each other over the slightest thing (but not sure how different that is than on a "typical" day). Jackson taking baths at night...solo...Trevor and Nathan taking a bath in the mornings before school. Tonight they had dinner at 3:45 pm (a record for us...or just about anybody!!!) and then they had a pretty good size snack right afterwards. They don't get food breaks during rehearsals so that's why you've gotta pack it in them before and after. Believe me, they're working so hard so they're extra hungry by the time I get them at 7:45 pm!

I gave both boys' teachers a heads up of their crazy schedule just to give them a little perspective if they fall asleep in the middle of math or carpet time. Thankfully, both teachers are very supportive and excited for their student to be part of a really cool opportunity and cast. I am very grateful.

Tomorrow, Nathan has his GI appointment and it couldn't have come at a better time. In the midst of writing this blog, I heard what I thought was Nathan choking and then coughing. David and I hauled butt in his room. I am certain (sadly, I remember what it sounded like for him as a baby) that Nathan refluxed at that moment and did choke on it a little. I woke Nathan slightly to be sure he was OK. He was/is.

On that note, I must catch some zzzzz's so I don't start crying when the boys start crying tomorrow...for no good reason! lol

Don't Bug Me - Day 10

Update: Today, Deasy's office said he won't be calling me. I also called Lausd Dr and they said someone will call me soon. They did. Just after Deasy's office called them AGAIN to handle me. BUT(!), I got Deasy's e-mail address today from assistant (prolly could have gotten it from on-line) so I plan to e-mail him directly.

Details: Deasy's office asked what school my child goes to. I asked which one, I have 3 kids...all at different Lausd schools so the least he could do is hear me out and return my phone call. His assistant tried telling me that he's out all week. I told her that wasn't true because I saw a sign that he'll be at El Camino High School on Wednesday for a meeting. I told her that if it's faster for me to go to this random meeting (to me), so I could speak with him regarding the policy I would. She said that would probably be faster because he continues to delegate my messages to Student Health Services. I told her that was a waste of time because I've gone through all the proper chains in command (incl SHS) and that's why I am now resorting to speaking with him regarding the subject. Sure enough, I receive a call from Lausd Dr's office finally working with me to set up a date and time for them to hold an educational meeting with our parents.

What a pain in the butt! However, lice and nits are WAY BIGGER OF A PAIN to deal with!!!

Don't Bug Me - Day 9

Update: No call from Deasy or Lausd Dr. Called Deasy today for 3rd day in a row.

Details: Not giving up.

You Know You've Been Married a While, Exhausted and a Mom When...

You walk out of Victoria's Secret with only a pair of sweat pants! LOL!!! It didn't even occur to me until I was at the register, paying. Hey, they were on clearance, my old fave sweat pants are too big on me so I had to seize the moment. ;-) Who has time for fancy, shmancy stuff anyhow?!

Zumba...

So nearly every Friday morning I attend the Zumba class at the Y. I love the instructor of this particular class and enjoy people watching as I am attempting my very whitest effort at not appearing so stereo-typical white chick dancing to salsa, reggae and hip-hop music. I'm a mess in there! I nearly threw out my back this morning with a new move and was being peer pressured to do a solo move in front of the entire class during our routine dance done only by participants leading the class for an entire song. I REFUSED TO DO IT!!! Friends were hating on me because I never did it in 2011 and they say it's a New Year so I need to do it. Ya ummm...I embarrass myself on my own, in my line of other peers counting my steps as I go and with my inability to move my hips the way most friends in there can. lol

On a Positive Note...

I recently signed up for a magazine subscription to Home Life. I've only ever had a magazine subscription to Parents and have never seen the rationale on any other subscriptions...until I caught a glimpse of this bi-monthly, Home Life. The actual writing is not as sophisticated as other magazines on the News Stands, HOWEVER, the quality of the subjects and biblical advice on real life issues is so worth it and incredibly inspiring. An article I just read was called Positively Negative...Dealing With 4 Kinds of Naysayers. A few key points that were made, I desperately want to remember!

  • Remember that negativity is born when people run into the limits of what they believe
The Difference Between Negativity & Wisdom

  • Negativity tears down your dream. Wisdom shows you a better way.
  • Negativity never listens and offers no hope or options. Wisdom listens and gives input.
  • Negativity leaves you feeling awful. Wisdom leaves you empowered and hopeful.
  • Negativity destroys. Wisdom renews.
  • Negativity has no new ideas. Wisdom fuels imagination.
"The Bible doesn't promise peace to those who dwell on the faults of others. It says that the Lord will keep in perfect peace those minds are stayed on Him (Isaiah 26:3). God makes big things happen in the most unlikely and sometimes negative places. If one of those places is your life, make this the year to dream big, dream bold, and live upward no matter who tries to snuff it out." - Bill Beausay

I'm so guilty of having roots of negativity. I desperately do my best to be positive, with myself and with others. For me, it's a heart change and softening that needs to occur...PLUS...building my faith and trust instead of doubting. I have made a lot of progress in those areas, particularly in 2011, but I am and always will be a major work in progress...never perfected until I am with Him.

Time Spent Wisely

I accomplished a lot on my to-do list in addition to working today. I'm looking forward to the weekend, even though most of it will be spent at rehearsals. Jackson has a cold that I am determined to keep isolated to only him. David enjoyed his 2nd day as Partner and as a team, they landed a pretty big client! Praying the client is a paying one. ;-) Trevor didn't want to talk about his day so I'm guessing I'll hear the bad news at our next parent-teacher conference...unless he cracks sooner. lol Nathan wants to know about the power breaker box, where it's located and if we'll ever need to go into the attic to get to it. Nathan also asked if a house builder provides a t.v. or if the person buying it needs to get their own.

Our Realtor is diligently working on looking for leases in the areas we're interested in moving to (ANYWHERE but LAUSD ran!!!) come June... So far, the only luck we're having is in Thousand Oaks which is pretty far from here. Apparently, everyone owns a house where we're looking to move...they all must have their act together...hence one of the reasons it's so desirable and we want to live there too...only as scabs or wanna-be's...a.k.a. renters. lol

Nathan's cardiologist appointment for tomorrow has been postponed by pediatrician's request so we can first have Nathan seen by a GI for likely acid reflux issues, which may be causing the chest pain. The GI appt is Tuesday and Cardiologist is the first week in Feb.

Looking forward to Zumba in the morning and running my errands without kids. I'm also looking forward to no homework, no packing lunches tomorrow night and getting a chance to hang with the fam tomorrow evening at home.

Don't Bug Me - Day 8

Update: Third times a charm! I got in touch with Principal and she LOVED the idea of having LAUSD Dr or Head Nurse give an educational meeting to the parents. She "strongly approves" this meeting. Called LAUSD Dr today to tell the great news about Principal loving the idea and TWO (!) different assistants of hers 1.) knew who I was and said "yes, I know who you are" (when I started spelling my last name) 2.) One of them said "no, she wasn't expecting your call" LOL!!! Second message left for Deasy today.

Details: Holy Crap! Was she not expecting my call because she thought she heard the end of me after our long winded, depressing, frustrating phone conversation last Friday??? Huh. Well...

Blah, Blah, Blah...

High impact workout to start the day, brunch with a friend, drove all over the Valley to look for Seussical required socks (still no luck. searching again Friday), then Magnet Parent Meeting tonight at Trevor's school.

In between all that, I went to a Weight Watchers store in search of some new (new to me) snacks. Well, I wasn't too impressed with the selection (majority has dairy :-( ), but I did buy a new cookbook from them and a new PointsPlus calculator. I had all my goodies (no mom, Elizabeth and Jenny...not "those goodies" lmbo!) in hand and walking up to the counter to only discover this solid, massive looking, black square. I started to laugh and told the cashier that they were killing me with this freaking scale that you COULDN'T avoid stepping on in order to pay...I WAS TOTALLY SET UP!!! lol I started making excuses (good ones in my opinion) like I just ate, it's mid day so of course I'm going to be heavier, etc. The lady just kept looking at me. I said fine. Took off my shoes, threw down my purse, and stepped on the dreadful black massive square. Naturally, the scale didn't work the first time so as if stepping on it 1x wasn't hard enough, I had to step off and then step back on again! Dang! After the machine thought a minute if it liked me or not, my "#'s" showed up on the digital screen. I was quite pleased with my #'s...especially since I just ate and it was mid day. ;-) With my work schedule change, I can only get in a workout 3x a week which is nothing compared to when I was training for my half. So all in all, I'm happy with the black square for now.

A discovery I made this afternoon was a confirmation that I am in fact, intolerant to peanuts (in any form). I get the WORST stomachache, extremely bloated and a rapid heart rate when I eat it/them. I have had my suspicions for a few months now, but this afternoon I have made it official in my book. I am finding more and more lately that I am allergic or intolerant to many ingredients! My next food intolerant testing on myself will be all the preservatives that exist. I am VERY allergic to MSG, I already know I have issues with Sweet 'n Low, so now I need to break down all those other gross ingredients to figure out my massive headaches I get within 20 min of eating or drinking something with that stuff in it. The problem is, most healthy alternative foods (cereal bars, drinks, sugar-free items, etc) have all those ingredients so it doesn't leave me with a whole lot other than fresh fruit and veggies...a girl can only eat so much of that stuff! So we'll see...

I received an exciting e-mail this evening from Trevor's teacher. She said that Trevor is the lead dancer in a dance performance coming up so she wanted to give me advanced notice so I could work my schedule around to watch him. I am super proud of him and very excited to watch him dance! In the spirit of 'keeping it real', Trevor is the lead because the original lead had dropped out. Either way, being 2nd in a group of great kids is pretty impressive in my opinion. :-)

Don't Bug Me - Day 7

Update: Called Principal again today...again no return phone call...day 2 of that. Called John Deasy today, left him a message.

Details: Could be reading too much into it (no way, not me! lol), BUT I totally think the Principal isn't returning my call because the LAUSD Pediatrician probably got to her first and is playing down the idea of her or the Head LAUSD Nurse to come to the school and speak to all the parents. I'm also shocked and encouraged that I actually got to the stage of being able to leave a message for Deasy! Just being able to leave a message for the guy is like pulling teeth. I'm certain that I got a random receptionist at the time who must have been filling in during a lunch break for the standard lady who acts like a verbal body guard to Deasy. I asked what the turn around time was for a returned call from him and I was told 24 hrs. I look forward to hearing from him by 2 pm tomorrow. Otherwise, I will call again, and the next day call again, and so on. I want to be heard, I want the policy to change and I want people to stop making decision based on popularity...doing the "right" thing isn't always popular. SO CHANGE THE FREAKING LICE/NIT POLICY people!!! Thanks.

A Word From The Wise!

Jackson: Mommy! A booger just flew out of nose! I need a kleenex!
Me (driving): Well, you'll have to wait a moment for me to be able to stop
*Trevor & Nathan laughing hard*
Nathan (while laughing): Just put the booger back in your nose, that's what I always do!
*laughter from everyone!*

Don't Bug Me - Day 6

Update: Left message with Principal yesterday, haven't heard back from her.

Life Is Like A Pin Ball Machine!

The last several days have been pre-occupied by casually looking for rentals in Agoura Hills and Calabasas, doing mass grocery shopping, standard household chores, attended award ceremony for Jackson, lunch with Rene, creating fundraiser flyers and e-mail reminders for the Magnet families at Trevor's school, hair cuts for boys, play Tooth Fairy, cleaning out David's current (soon to be old!) office, church, lunch with dad and Michelle (SO AWESOME!!!), Suessical rehearsals, addressing envelopes for David's announcements, shopping for little league baseball supplies, going to the YMCA and running standard errands.

Phew! What a whirl wind!

Lunch with Rene was as great as I had hoped...and even better! The comfort that an old friend brings is like an energy boost...mentally, emotionally, physically and in this case, spiritually. Rene and I barely ever have moments to speak due to both of our hectic lives. Yet seeing each other for the 1st time in 4 years was almost as if no time had ever passed. We were chatting, laughing and confessing our challenges that motherhood has brought us. Having this time with Rene was like a big hug from the Lord. I needed this fellowship for myself right in that mind set I was in on Friday. Due to all of last week's events, I felt like I was a pin ball being bounced and shot around from here to there and sometimes scoring big points and sometimes not...but always in constant motion.

When I first moved to LA I met very few people that I really enjoyed. They were grounded and not sucked into the "LA hype". Rene and Rebecca (who I had the pleasure to visit with 2 1/2 weeks ago when they were in town) were part of the original group of friends that I got to know pretty good through our mutual "mommy group". All of us at the time only had 1 baby. My oh my was life SO SIMPLE (in comparison) and yet, at least for myself, I HAD NO IDEA HOW SIMPLE IT WAS!!! Watching and listening to these two women fill in the blanks from the previous time we had seen each other was true testament to God's love and work. He is working in them and they are baring the fruit of the Spirit big time! I am blessed and encouraged to have them in my life.

General Run Down...

David: Excited for his last day of current work and relieved his office is empty!
Trevor: LOVES rehearsals!
Jackson: Toothless, has been especially witty lately
Nathan: Chest pains on/off all weekend, defiant stage, tantrums, loves rehearsals, continues to strongly dislike school and asks daily to be homeschooled.

Don't Bug Me - Day 5

Update: LAUSD Dr called ME to discuss the District's Lice/Nit Policy. We spoke for over an hour and got some what no where.

Details: What a draining phone call that was! Holy smokes! We were going round and round with our points and never really able to see eye-to-eye on any part of the subject. Towards the end of the conversation, the Dr made the suggestion that we should have her or the LAUSD Head Nurse come to our school and speak to the parents about lice, nits and other communicable infections/infestations. I seriously LOL (!) and said OK (if for nothing else, since all my time had been wasted on a call with her), I'll discuss with Principal and I'm certain she would LOVE to have either of you there (there student attendance rates are fair-poor) and help support the families. Hahahaha...how quickly she started back pedaling! I told her no, she offered and made this suggestion so I will take her up on it and will discuss it with the Principal.

I still plan on going to John Deasy to explain EVERYTHING (isn't he lucky! lol) and ask for his help on this policy change but will not push too hard because when I asked LAUSD Dr about whether or not she would change the policy based on Deasy's request, she said NO. I couldn't believe it! I realized at that moment that the battle I was fighting was/is the "world". I refuse to fight with the Dr or Head Nurse, but pray for them. I don't know what their spiritual needs are/aren't but based on conversations (specific comments that were made) and the way they discussed this topic with me I really felt the Lord's presence and Him telling me to just pray for them.

My focus will continue on keeping MY children safe and healthy. How any school district decides to handle health and safety, I have to prioritize and listen to my gut as each individual case gets brought to light. I will continue to ask for random hair checks in Nathan's class in particular and take each day at a time. I do feel the Lord working on my heart, my mind and I feel like this time in a public classroom is a transitional period for something so much greater for our children's education.

Title??? Got Me!

Jackson lost ANOTHER tooth! So now he is missing both top, front teeth. I didn't even know it was possible for Jackson to get any cuter, but in a silly way, it was!!! He looks sooooo cute with those two teeth missing. Jackson says it feels funny sucking his fingers. Good...maybe he'll stop! lol :-D

David's final days as an employee are wrapping up quite nicely. His 2nd to last paycheck was "fair" according to his original agreement. Praise the Lord! While everyone else is working 54 hours this week, David left at 4:30 today. Don't worry, I am still totally in touch with reality! lol This is just the calm before the tax season storm...I will eventually become a 'Tax Widow' yet again. However, with this news this is another answer to prayer, another testament shown to trust in the Lord, ask, wait and He will answer and provide according to His will...and always give thanks. I am very thankful. :-)

Trevor has really enjoyed this week back at school. Long days on the bus he could totally do without, but at least school-school is going well. I can't think of the word, but the new part of the curriculum this reporting period is Art. He's learning all about different artists, tools that artists use, etc. Today they touched upon cursive writing and he thinks it's going to be really cool, because he'll be able to write faster. I remember in 2nd grade learning to write in cursive...I thought I was so cool! lol Wait. What age didn't I think I was cool?! Baahahaha... ;-)

So glad tomorrow is Friday! Brunch with Rene, no homework, last day of packing lunches for 3 days...YAY!

Don't Bug Me - Day 4

Update: Supposedly, everyone nit free. Nathan returns to school tomorrow.

Details: Nathan is ticked off that he has to go back to school. Insisting he wants to do homeschool even though today he was upset with the assignments I had given him to complete to turn in for school tomorrow. I told him that's what homeschool would be like...lots of worksheets done in my timing.

Day 3 in attempts to get in touch with Nury Martinez. Still no return call or e-mail. I did however, hear from some lady within LAUSD who gave me the phone # of the Pediatrician who is "The Doctor" for LAUSD (reminds me of a few scenes in Erin Brockovich when Hinckley had their own "water testers"!). This is "The" person to speak with in regards to the District Policy and getting the ball rolling to propose a change in this policy.

Calling her (?) tomorrow.

Loaded Questions = Mushy Mommy Brain

My last few days with just Nathan has been quite interesting and a very nice opportunity to get to know my little guy a little more...but in a much different way. I can tell you when every milestone happened, about his social skills, fine motor challenges, his medical wrap sheet, etc., but for the first time in 5 years, I am actually getting 1 on 1 time with Nathan that's lasting more than an errand or two.

Some interesting things I've learned about Nathan are:

1. The kid rarely stops talking
2. He can't be still for a moment (constantly readjusting his seating, wiping his hair off his forehead, picking at fingers, wiping his mouth constantly, etc)
3. I think Nathan thinks faster than he talks...seriously! He will jump from topic to topic, go back to 2 previous topics ago in the midst of the current topic so then you're all confused about what the heck he's talking about (kind of like this 3rd point I'm mentioning about him! lol)
4. He has very little self confidence :-(
5. Nathan has VERY deep thoughts.
6. Nathan's favorite color is white. Guess why...Because you can see thru white. OH MY WORD! What 5 year old thinks like that?!

Nathan's deep thoughts I've acknowledged a few months ago but now having the time to focus more on his thoughts...it's mentally exhausting! lol He's challenging me (in a good way) to no end. I'm used to Trevor's well thought out questions that take maybe an extra moment to respond to, Jackson's are super easy to give a quick response to, but Nathan! Oh my! I have to really give a lot of thought to my answers with him because his questions are so grown up but yet he's only 5 so I need to tailor my questions appropriately.

Here are some of the topics/questions from Nathan...just from today:

1. Is there fire under the earth, like heaven is above the earth?
2. When you die, are your eyes open or closed? (Nathan's preference is to have his open so he can look up to see the sky...I didn't ask for his preference ;-))
3. Why are angels see thru?
4. Who goes to the bad place?
5. Why is there a bad place?
6. What if Costco ran out of food everywhere in their store?
7. I don't think Costco has an attic because their ceilings are very high and open so I don't think there is an attic above the ceilings.
8. What are those tiny little lights called again that come on during an emergency (referring to the ones on exit signs)?
9. When can I get food allergy shots (3rd or 4th time asking that one!)?
10. Why do only old people smoke?
11. Why does anyone want to even try smoking if it's bad for you?

WOW! I can't imagine what tomorrow will bring! lol

Don't Bug Me - Day 3

Update:  2 of the 3 kids showed up with nits again today. The school nurse removed them this afternoon herself.

Details: Nathan and I payed his school a visit today to turn in a packet of work he completed in 1 day. The nurse was in and she and I spoke briefly. She was trying to once again, convince me nits are okay, and it's only a few on both students at this point. I told her it only takes 1 to hatch.

LAUSD Head Nurse lady called me in the late afternoon. She said based on nurse removing the nits personally from these children, they have fulfilled my requests of the classroom being lice and nit free.

I called the Principal to discuss. I thanked her very much for her efforts. I also shared how nervous I was to send Nathan tomorrow, even though they totally did what I wanted (I know, I must sound ridiculous!), but it was all so fast just after hearing the nurse cop a little attitude with me about there only being a few nits left. I asked the Principal to keep her "Principal Hat" on, but tip it to the side a bit and put on her "Mom Hat" (she has a daughter) and if she was in my shoes, what would she do. The Principal paused a bit and said, well, let's have the nurse do one more check on all 3 of the students tomorrow and if they are completely clear of everything, bring Nathan to school on Friday. I told her we have a deal.

Moving Forward: IF Nathan gets lice within 1-2 weeks from this point forward, I WILL COMPLETELY FLIP MY LID!!! I will then STRONGLY consider writing a note to the school and everyone's boss', boss to excuse Nathan from the rest of the school year. They can give me all the workbooks that are his, worksheets, etc and we'll homeschool with their curriculum at that point. I will just have to figure out his Special Ed services though... :-/

Gender Please (Check a Box)

After weeks of hard work and dealing with a very loose and crooked top, front tooth, Jackson finally worked it out last night! He was quite proud of himself and was dreaming up all these wishes and thoughts of what the Tooth Fairy might bring him overnight. The pressure was on! lol

*Insert Imagination Here* (I've got no clue how to upload his adorable toothless picture. :-/ )

This morning, Jackson had a burst of enthusiasm because he discovered $6.00 under his pillow! I mentioned how the Tooth Fairy is pretty smart to have given him $6.00 since he's 6 years old. Some where in the comment I referenced the Tooth Fairy to be a female. David in ear shot, piped up and said that the Tooth Fairy could be a guy. Interesting thought. My ruling is that since this "fairy" isn't really, "real" anyway, and I am the "Tooth Fairy" in the house AND we have all boys...down to the pet even (!) in our home...I can make believe that this Tooth Fairy person/thing is a GIRL!!! :-)

Well, I will certainly work on uploading this picture I have of Jackson's new smile. In the meantime, I'm pretty excited for Jackson who is about to loose the tooth right next to this past one. Jackson is dreaming up toys he wants from this Tooth Fairy Lady now.

Don't Bug Me - Day 2

Update: Same 3 children in Nathan's class returned to school today with nits (lice eggs) in their hair. Parents of the children claimed to have done a treatment on their hair.

Now The Details: So now, hours away from mid-week, Nathan will be spending another day home with me to avoid an obvious health concern going on in the classroom. Because I do care about Nathan being in school and keeping up his skills, I went to great lengths today to get in touch with anyone within LAUSD who would give a darn that this "policy" that is in effect freaking sucks and is irresponsible on their part.

I left about 5-6 messages, all for different people. Of those 5-6 messages, when asked by the LAUSD employee what the message was in regards to, I took the pleasure in giving a detailed, graphic message of how gross lice and nits are and how allowing nits on a child in the classroom is disregarding public health and safety and that they're only protecting the children who DO have the nits and NOT protecting the children who DO NOT have the problem. About half of those employees didn't even know what District policy I was referring to, because they were still aware of the OLD District policy of a child being sent home. When I told the District's employees their own District's policy they were shocked and completely agreed with me. Not a surprise at all, Dr. John Deasy's assistant supports the District's policy and gave me a very hard time for keeping Nathan out of school. I told her that health and safety always comes first...even before education. Then I asked her if she would hang out with a friend who she knew had the flu and would be sneezing and coughing all over her while they were hanging out. Of course she wouldn't! Assistant got super snotty and said I could be fined for not sending Nathan to school so I moved on to my next call.

Head Nurse of LAUSD called me back this evening. She agrees with me 100% and was extremely friendly throughout the conversation. We discussed and agreed on what needs to happen in Nathan's classroom (since the policy can't and won't be changing over night). We first went over how the school nurse needs to get an updated course on how to get rid of nits and stop misguiding the parents. I told the Head Nurse that Nathan isn't returning to school until his classmates are 100% free and clear of anything. She was shocked!!! She said everything that everyone else has said about education this, and education that. I asked the same "flu question" to her. She was grossed out and understood my point. I told her that I care VERY much about my children's education, but bottom line is that I am a responsible parent and I could not knowingly put any of my kids in a situation where their health or safety is being compromised. Head Nurse was GREAT and said, I know you care about your child's education, otherwise you wouldn't be working this hard to try and get him back into the classroom under your standards. What a wonderful lady who actually was able to see and understand my perspective on this topic. God bless her (seriously)!

Then...I hear from Nathan's Principal at school (I had left 2 messages for her over the last 2 days). We had a nice conversation. This poor woman already knows I'm a pit-bull when I have a passion or focus regarding what's best for my kiddos! She too was very understanding of my perspective and was also grossed out when I was turning the tables on the situation when giving other examples of what it would be like sending my children to school knowing there is nits or lice there. From previous battles, she knows how important the kids' education is to me so she said she will work with the nurse and the teacher about the nits and about getting Nathan all his school work so we can be working from home until I am comfortable with having him back in the classroom. I really appreciated her support.

Nathan's Thoughts On The Situation: How is Nathan feeling being away from school and his friends? So glad you asked! lol This kid is LOVING it!

Nathan: Mommy, will I ever go back to school???
Me: Eventually, but everyone's hair has to be healthy before it's OK to go back. Do you miss your school and your friends?
Nathan: Nope! I want to stay home and do work here. I want to do homeschool.
Me: How do you know? What if you don't like it?
Nathan: Oh, I will! I've never done it before but I want to try. Jackson did it and he said it's great!
Jackson (all the way from the kitchen): I didn't like homeschool!!! Noooo way!!!
Me: Great, thanks Jackson! hahahaha....

Don't Bug Me

Well, as I said I would, Jackson and Nathan didn't return to school today due to the issue of lice in the classrooms prior to Christmas vacation. I requested the nurse of both schools to do a complete head check on each child in their class. If everyone checked out OK then they would return to school tomorrow. Jackson's class is OK. Nathan's (as I expected) has 3 children with eggs in their hair. LAUSD's policy is that they send a letter home to all the parents of the children in the class to make them aware of the issue. An additional note goes home at the end of the day to the students with the actual problem. After consulting with David, I told the nurse that Nathan will not return to school until all the students in his class are free from lice and eggs. I also left a message with the Principal to discuss further.

I have learned far more than I have EVER wanted to learn about this subject and I do not feel it's in any of my family's best interest to be intentionally exposed to this disgusting, costly, time consuming pest.

I've requested all school work from Nathan's teacher but I don't know that they'll give it since it's my choice to keep him home. Fine by me, I'll pull out workbooks from homeschooling Jackson last year and continue to practice working on Nathan's blooming reading skills.

Funny quote from boys today:

Me: Nathan, stop bugging about this
Jackson: Ya, you're like acting like lice...a BUG!
Nathan: Not ahhh...

It All Happened SO Fast!

My thoughts and heart are heavy.

After a fight with our landlord over clean-up of the mold & mildew the feeling was mutual when our landlord told me to find a new rental. It was actually just at the tip of the fight when he uttered those dreadful words. We hadn't even gotten to the meat of the topic when he decided to get dramatic & irrational on me. At times, it's ME who gets that way first, but I think any 3rd party (plumber witnessed most of it, but took off once landlord raised it to another level!) would agree that I of all people was being rational and asking for the bare minimum to be done. I wasn't asking for the entire interior and exterior on the entire side of house be torn out and replaced like landlord was yelling about. Just freaking clean up until you no longer see it anymore...for the record, I THINK the interior is extremely minimal clean-up...not certain. Anyway, I was/am settling as it is with using just bleach to clean up or "wipe" as landlord put it. That is SO not enough to clean up this type of job (rotting, soaking wet wood, drywall covered in mildew and the SMELL...OH MY THE SMELL on a warm day). Because he's so freaking cheap he wants to only clean up where the hole is cut out on the side of the house. UMMM...HELLO!!! There is a water stain spreading several feet on either side of the hole and has been sitting there for MANY, MANY MONTHS that I have called him out for in the past, complained about the freaking dishwasher residue that sure enough DOES have everything to do with this whole washer draining leak thing. I called landlord out for that too and got a standard response from him "oh it's nothing, if it's running, don't worry about it. All the pipes in the house are all brand new, can't imagine there being a problem". I freaking told him that I thought the dishwasher and washer drain leak must have something to do with it...AND GUESS WHAT...the plumber who came out said that the pipe that those two machines connect and run to ARE THE ORIGINAL PIPES from when the house was originally built back in the 50's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think our landlord is pissed off because of all of this, BUT in addition, he's now been bent over by the original plumber guy who supposedly "changed all original plumbling to copper pipes".

"Some guy" will call me at some point to "wipe" the mildew & mold. In the meantime, landlord "wiped" and poured (YES, POURED) bleach down the interior back wall of washer/dryer area to "solve" that mold & mildew issue. So in addition to inhaling mold & mildew particles in the house, we're also inhaling the lovely intense smell of bleach. What a joke!

We've dealt with quite a bit around our neighborhood and with the horrible school around the corner. David and I have always said, at least we have this great house to live in. Now, it's not so great...and neither is it's owner. What a drag. I am/was so not in the mind set of moving this year. I wanted Trevor to finish out his elementary career at the same school, and we have plenty of other big transititions going on this summer, that adding a move is the LEAST thing that I wanted to deal with.

Oh well...

And The Beat Goes On...

Sitting in a some-what quiet home (t.v. louder than I prefer :-)) with everyone prepared for tomorrow; the work and school week grind. Our Christmas break is officially over and the count down for Easter break has begun! I'm still not excited about the boys returning to school, but it is, what it is so whatevs.

This week I do get to look forward to a visit from a friend who is visiting from out of state! Rene and I haven't seen each other in 4 years!!! I'm bummed that I won't have the pleasure to meet her twins that she's had since her move, because Rene is traveling solo...lucky girl. :-) This year she has accepted the challenge and blessing of homeschooling...gee...another smart cookie in the group! I look forward to hearing how that is going...

This week will also bring an adjustment to my exercise routine. Traditionally, I have been doing my training for my Half Marathon at Disneyland. With the more recent news of a date change with Trevor and Nathan's 'Seussical the Musical' performances, I will not be in a position to participate in the Half. I have worked EXTREMELY HARD in my training for this. I am very disappointed on many levels. On that note (eyes all watery), I will stop discussing this topic. Even if I'm the only one reading this post (back to myself to make sure I make any sense at all), it will be too difficult to read/hear myself say it again and again. I'm a mom and life is life and so the beat goes on... I do look forward to having different time available now for my "old normal" exercise routine of zumba, aerobics, abs-express and perhaps the dreadful, but impactful boot camp class!!! I have plenty of Holiday weight/inches that need some shedding so back to it, it is.

Oh! Tomorrow the landlord and a different plumber come by to pay the hole in our exterior wall a visit. SOOOO glad this is happening sooner than originally when the landlord said it would be. Probably my videos of the leak in action and requesting the hole get temporarily closed up (to prevent rodents and bugs) put a little spur in the decision maker. I'm still in prayer about the entire situation and specifically praying that the proper clean-up of the mold and/or mildew gets made in a timely and responsible fashion. If you're reading, please include all of this in your prayers as well, if you don't mind. :-)

Flash Back By 5 Years...Nearly To The Date

Then: mold & mildew in our townhouse
Now: mold and/or mildew newly discovered in our rental (behind washer/dryer and very likely in Trevor's room)

Then: Nathan has to see a cardiologist
Now: Nathan has an appointment for a cardiologist

Then: David starts a new job with his first CPA firm
Now: David starts a new job with a CPA firm

Then: Tax season was beginning with all these things up in the air and I left to handle/manage it all so David could do his best at handling and focus on his new job...which IS his priority and takes seriously. Thank you honey!!!
Now: Tax season is on the horizon with all these things up in the air (not to mention our day to day schedule) so I will be left to handle/manage it all so David can and will do his best at his new job. Thank you again honey!!!

Man, 5 years ago our family was in a pretty dark place with so many other things going on that were not listed above. In respects to 'Keeping it Real', I wouldn't be honest if I didn't admit that I am overwhelmed with the start of our New Year. I'm actually quite sick over the mildew/mold situation in our home. It's gross, smells, looks atrocious and from first hand experience, I know it's VERY pricey and difficult to clean up or get rid of (thank God we're renters!!!). Regardless of who is footing the bill, we are having to deal with the logistics, mess, smell, crews coming in & out in attempt to address the problem, etc.

On the positive side of things, (which I must acknowledge my honest feelings above first, but focus on the positive going forward) I have so much more knowledge and experience than I did 5 years ago. The boys are older so a lot more independent than 5 years ago + in school full time, I now know what to expect during a tax season, Nathan over all has been in great health over the last 2-3 years, my faith has matured a lot and I now have an outlet to help with my feelings...ZUMBA and running...in addition to my over eating through my feelings...Hahahaha... I guess another positive is just more first hand, life experiences! I never went to college, but I tell ya, I know that a lot of which I have learned, as an adult, could never be taught from a book; as richly as any first hand experience could. That my friend is priceless (and cheesy, huh?!)! My first hand experiences are tallying pretty close to a 4 year college tuition though! lol

BIG NEWS!

Today was a big day for David...and really, our whole family! David gave his 2 week's notice at his job to join forces with another team, but this time, as a Partner. :-) This decision hasn't been easy and for myself, it's a huge step out into faith that God will meet us here, right now and everyday in the present to meet our needs. So basically, He'll continue providing just as He's always done. lol! AMEN! David's last day is Jan., 17th. Only 2 weeks left of a stable paycheck...at least for a while!

On a much different note, Nathan was seen by his Pediatrician today to address a chest pain that Nathan has been complaining about. This is the 3rd time in the last few months he's complained about this and the pain lasts anywhere from a few days - several weeks. First time I brought him in, he did have wheezing so we used the nebulizer to treat the wheezing. Nathan stopped complaining about the pain. Second time was just before Thanksgiving, so Dr & I consulted via e-mail and agreed to sit back and see what happens this time and do the nebulizer if necessary. Soooo...this time, I don't hesitate and I bring Nathan in. No wheezing and his heart sounds fine. BUT, because we're talking about Nathan who has a pretty big medical wrap sheet, the Dr wants to rule out anything with his heart. Tomorrow (1/4), I will bring Nathan in for a chest x-ray to look at his heart and ribcage area. We should get those results 24 hrs from the time I bring him in. Secondly, after the results of x-rays, either way Dr wants Nathan to see a Cardiologist who will more than likely do an EKG and go from there.

The Pediatrician is "not overwhelmed with concern" about this chest pain, but certainly wants us to do a thorough check at this point since this is the 3rd "episode" of complaints and no wheezing is present. Dr said, could just be tight chest muscles??? Hmmmm... I'm so glad I've learned not to panic until there is something to actually panic about. It's been a difficult road to learn this lesson, but better now, than later. I just have to stay focused, proactive and remain in prayer. I can't control anything else.

Last week of Christmas break *sigh*

This is the last week that the boys are home from school. The boys and I have so much enjoyed our time together and our very relaxed schedule...because we've had no schedule! Sleeping in each day, staying in pajamas until 9 am at the earliest (most often until noon!), taking our time to get anything accomplished, playing games and working together on puzzles, trying new recipes and the list goes on.

Usually at this point in a break from school, as much as I've enjoyed them, I am ready for the boys to get back into school and I need a break from them. :-) This time around it's different. I have truly enjoyed every moment with them...even during our lengthy grocery trips! I don't know if it's because I realize just how quickly they're growing up so I can appreciate this time better, or just that I am completely burned out with and tired of being disappointed in the public school system or possibly that I am loving the stages that each of the boys are in??? I'm pretty sure that there is truth in probably all of the above! I am not at my breaking point yet, but I certaintly can appreciate and understand why families choose to homeschool (like both my sister's do). I'm almost realizing that it's actually MORE work to have them in school all day...especially when my children's needs are so different from each other, that this year we opted for 3 different schools! Our intensions and priorities were spot on when making that big decision so I have no regrets, but I am feeling and living the realities of that choice now...mid school year.

OK, so off that RANT that I promised would happen with this whole Blogging thing!!! ;-) Shifting gears now... :-)

As I mentioned, with all this "free" time, I have tried new recipes. Tonight so far has been my favorite! This side dish was so AMAZING and the texture was PERFECT that I already have my "community side dish" to share with the fam at 2012's Thanksgiving! Hahaha... It's called - Thyme, Carrots and Parsnip Mash...from Weight Watchers. You would NEVER know that it's from W.W.! The color, the flavor, the aroma and again...the texture is sooooo good!!! Never mind the fact that Jackson gagged on it, Trevor cried at the thought that he had to at least try it and Nathan willingly tried it, but snubbed his nose at it just after...it really is so good! lol I'm certain that my portion size was not the recommended portion in the magazine. ;-)

Happy New Year!

Wow, my very first blog of the year...well, actually...EVER! Not sure how all this works, so bare with me during this learning curve. :-)

Sorry it isn't more exciting! lol
